Meet the healthiest people on Earth

In his 2005 article for ‘National Geographic,’ Dan Buettner described several places where people live long and healthy lives, often up to a hundred years. Those places, called ‘blue zones,’ included Okinawa in Japan, Ogliastra in Sardinia, Italy, Icaria in Greece, Loma Linda in California, USA, and Nicoya in Costa Rica. A number of research projects were carried out to discover what it is that enables the blue zones’ inhabitants to enjoy such long and healthy lives. As it turned out, they differed in almost every respect: geography, cuisine, language, culture, religion. But they shared a few key characteristics: they all cherished family, enjoyed a diet rich in vegetables (especially legumes), engaged daily in physical activity, had a sense of community and they were non-smokers. They also had a purpose in life, which is what makes us all want to get up in the morning and welcome each new day…
